Teaching

I encourage students to examine the environment around them as they study geography and environmental science. By applying the theoretical knowledge to places that they know, students build connections between the course material and the world around them. This expands their understanding of the course material and makes the theoretical knowledge more relevant to their daily lives.

My advanced courses also equip students with coding and data analysis skills that are relevant to a wide range of disciplines and set students apart as they begin their careers. My assignments utilize open source software, and they teach students how to design reproduceable analyses that follow the best practices of open science.

Teaching Philosophy

Every student is surrounded by a natural ecosystem and is constantly affected by the cycles and undulations of Earth’s environmental processes. Regardless of whether they are studying on top of a mountain or in the middle of a large city, every student is well-positioned to bear witness to environmental change. My teaching is deeply rooted in the local context and gives students the technical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to identify and analyze environmental trends.

Diversity in the Classroom

Students are entitled to a learning environment where their academic success depends solely on their willingness and effort to learn the course material. As university educators, we have an obligation to ensure that our classrooms are equitable and teach students all the skills they need to succeed in a university setting.
